Aladdin — Movie Review

aladdin movie review 2020

That being said, Aladdin is a vibrant adventure, featuring three excellent central performances, and laced with intelligent subtext about class - like meets. But Disney have taken strides to include the Arabic language in subtle moments. Tragically little of this matters, because the musical numbers are staged and edited as if director Ritchie had never even seen a musical. His energy was unforgettable — and his performances stuck with generations of viewers. That starts with Guy Ritchie, a seemingly surprising choice that actually makes a whole lot of sense. Visually, the movie looks like it just lost a game of paintball.

'Aladdin' review: A whole new same old world ... this time with Will Smith

Of course, some may simply enjoy the sheer bulk of entertainment that Aladdin unloads. Murderous greed, conditional love and lifelong servitude are met head-on with revelations of self-sacrifice, friendship and freedom — the last of which is communicated in a moment where Genie is, literally, freed from his shackles. Here are the sources I mentioned in my review. Club members also get access to our members-only section on RogerEbert. What breaks my heart is how so many people are praising this film, especially how the character of Jasmine is portrayed as a positive role model. A Southern California native, Rob Vaux fell in love with the movies at an early age and has been a professional critic since the year 2000.

Aladdin (2019)

aladdin movie review 2020

Obviously not as good or as funny as the original animated version who could top Robin Williams? The film was directed by Guy Ritchie and co-stars Marwan Kenzari, Navid Negahban, Nasim Pedrad, Billy Magnussen and Numan Acar. The momentum, at which the film moves, is yet another problem that cannot be overlooked — all the characters are given ample time and attention to grow and develop, while the ending is wrapped up in a tearing hurry. You will hear Arabic being spoken in the background of scenes at the market, and you will see some Arabic written in books and across scrolls. Smith does the smartest thing by not copying it. Mena Massoud 'Open Heart', 'Jack Ryan' as Aladdin and Naomi Scott 'Lemonade Mouth', 'Life Bites' as Jasmine — both relative newcomers — knocked it out of the park nonetheless. The reasons why go back to the basics, which the filmmakers attend to with consummate professionalism. Disney threw a wide net internationally in what appears to be an honest effort at multiethnic casting.

Aladdin (2019)

aladdin movie review 2020

The fresh pairing of Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott works and is a welcome surprise as the duo share an amazing chemistry on screen and pretty much hold on to the likeability factors of their respective characters till the very end. I'm glad that I read one reviewer who shared my viewpoint. In my opinion the agenda is clear. I still prefer the original but this is a good choice for family night. Why cut out the scene with Jasmine and the birdcage, or the scene when Aladdin gets pushed down and laughed at by the townspeople One Jump Ahead Reprise? Genie not only brings the humour, but also gives the film an excuse to be more visually inventive. Film Review: Will Smith in 'Aladdin' Reviewed at Walt Disney Studios, Burbank, May 9, 2019.

Aladdin Movie Review {3.5/5}: Critic Review of Aladdin by Times of India

aladdin movie review 2020

It took Walt Disney Studios the better part of a century to build a library filled with what the world thinks of as animated classics, and less than a decade to pillage that catalog in service of all these entertaining but clearly unnecessary live-action remakes — movies that, from the looks of things, will not stand the test of time, but have proven awfully profitable in the short term. Let me tell you, I am a feminist and I felt her character was very poorly portrayed. After reading that and watching Aladdin it became somewhat clear that parts of the movie are up for interpretation. But the changes are most apparent when it comes to Jasmine. The only scary part was Jafar at the end. Aladdin is - and depending on your familiarity with the original animated film, this may or may not come as a surprise - an outright musical. Local media reports late Wednesday indicate that several people are dead following a shooting.

Aladdin movie review: Will Smith makes the magic happen in Guy Ritchie’s Disney film

Executive producers: Marc Platt, Kevin De La Noy. But the original had people of no color everyone was white, I mean i get that you don't actually see the people but you might as well make it people of color! He lives in the heart of surfer country and still defends the Star Wars prequels against all logic and sanity. This genie is less cartoony but campier, less magical and more human. And honestly it wasn't very offensive. Despite its grandeur and larger-than-life cinematography-animation, at two hours and eight minutes — the film starts to feel bit of a drag.

Even the pronunciation of certain words will sound, in some small way, more authentic. I found them very interesting and it gave me a new perspective on what to look for when picking appropriate movies for kids. This charming young rascal, whose best friend is his loyal monkey Abu, encounters the bewitching Jasmine Naomi Scott , not realizing she is the princess. Neither of these is permitted to seize the spotlight for very long, though. Smith will get the majority of the attention, bringing so much of his own brand to the Genie he even calls out his own name in the end-credits song. Production: A Disney release and presentation of a Rideback production.
