Catching Up with Charlie Mackesy, Author of “The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse”

In many respects this book reminded me of The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. When they meet the fox, it is caught in a snare. Instinctively both the fox and the mole know if the mole frees the fox, the fox should then kill it, but if the mole leaves the fox in the snare, it will die. It makes me wake up in the middle of the night feeling scared, but also excited. The blurp already tells you all you need to know about the story so I'm just here to show you a few of my favourite pages that will simultaneously give you an impression of the art and the message behind it.

As much as I appreciate the story and the beautiful messages, I cannot move past the font. The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse are four friends who share a deep, unshakable bond. Authenticity is a strained and overworked word nowadays, but it feels right to set it down here. The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse weaves together some of the most valuable life lessons that we learn as children, but often forget by the time we reach adulthood. The book has been read during yoga classes and generated requests for wall-prints and tattoos. I would like a physical copy and I would recommend this to everyone. The horse is the last character to appear.

You see, as of late, my Mum and I have had disagreements on quite a few books, so I was within my rights to be a tiny bit worried. I went out the following day and bought this, his latest book, and sat there in the city bookstore reading it. To get a better understanding of it, the managers actually let us read this book on the job winning! Now, his finest artwork has been gathered together in this beautifully produced volume, a book to treasure forever and a permanent reminder of the need for compassion and love in a world suffused with ignorance and hatred. I share my thoughts on this rather amazing book because there is much in it which could be useful for students and practitioners of Astrological Psychology. The fox has a Saturnian quality; he is restrained and caught in a trap when the boy and mole discover him and set him free. Gentle and kind of sweet, and inspirational. Sometimes you can override your instincts, and the fox becomes a mostly silent companion on their wanderings.

Night Shyamalan, Bear Grylls, Howard Goodall, Harry Enfield and Sting. Honestly, I think everyone should read this book. There's a sort of story developing throughout but that's not the main strength or focus of this book. Simply the Best A phenomenal book. It is easy to finish, in a sense, if you can get used to the terrible cursive and the eye-rolling prose.

I had forgotten that I initially read the introduction, which caused me to stop reading. The conversations of the boy, the mole, the fox and the horse have been The Sunday Times Bestseller and New York Times Bestseller. It is bookended by a long-limbed hanging plant and a candle that claims to smell like Prosecco. He was really kind, the kindest animal. Based on Charlie's daily Instagram.

the boy the mole the fox and the horse by charlie mackesy

Almost every page has something special on it. Charlie Mackesy offers inspiration and hope in uncertain times in this beautiful book based on his famous quartet of characters. Within these banal perimeters stand, spine by spine, the books that I have meant the most to me throughout my life. In Charlie's first book, you will find his most-loved illustrations and some new ones too. As adults it warms the heart, and make you want to be a better person and love yourself. It is also incredibly beautiful. It would make a lovely gift for a special someone and would also be a great book to read with children.
