Thankfully, none of the animals are dubbed over with human voices. The process is advancing with animals as well, as now fur and skin can be recreated with near photo-realistic perfection. However, that tradition is alive again, albeit in an unexpected and expensive manner: the live-action Disney remake. The ability to really sell these scenes to an audience is a testament to young Sethi's acting skills. It was only a matter of time before The Jungle Book received the same treatment. You kill for sport and anger and treasure. Really, what mostly defines this as a live-action remake is the presence of the Walt Disney logo on the poster. Mowgli is ably played by Jason Scott Lee, and given how long it took Disney to stop dragging its feet this past decade and make its films less white, it's still kind of a surprise to see him front and center in this movie rather than an oiled-up white dude named Chris. It didn't pay off for The Jungle Book to be more Kipling than Disney. Every animal had dialogue, though their mouths never moved when they spoke—think Homeward Bound. Each set was built for a shot. The sounds of Li'l Raksha whimpering brought Mowgli back to the jungle. On their journey to Monkey City, they learned Shere Khan was in pursuit. Sam Neill plays Major Brydon with a sturdiness while Cary Elwes plays Captain Boone with a dark and cruel tone.
