There were a couple of moments where I thought it may sound bluesy. It's the first production at the new venue The Shed, and there's a lot that needs to be said, so I'll break it down into two sections: The Venue: It's a good thing I left myself a lot of time to explore the area because it's not the easiest to find from 34th since it's down a lot of steps and looks from the corner like the entrance is closed. As the text progresses, references are made to Truman Capote, Homer, Pearl Bailey, Priam, and Yves Montand, among other ancient and modern luminaries. May 20th, 2019 See it if you are fans of both terrific performers and don't care what they are doing. Ben Whishaw was brilliant and Renee Fleming terrific.

April 14th, 2019 See it if You love experimental poetry or performance art. It really felt as if I had just wasted 90 minutes, plus travel time, plus time away from my dog, plus money for the ticket. Under the staging of international director Katie Mitchell, Whishaw dons makeup and elaborate costuming including a body stocking, white dress and wig until he is finally ready for his close-up as Monroe. She lives in Manhattan's West Village with her husband, daughter and dog, Arlo Guthrie Marshmallow. We all know where this ends up. Renée Fleming and Ben Whishaw in Norma Jeane Baker of Troy.

Folks with conventional tastes are advised to steer clear of The Shed until it programs something a bit friendlier. As for production values, I read reviews that revealed aspects of the show that were invisible to most of the audience who were not in critics' seats. She sets it up, rests her hands on the keys, and so it begins. And the creators explore these ideas with a bend of history, verse, music, and sound in a way that is indeed complex and difficult to riddle out entirely, but if you let go somewhat of trying to understand every word, the sentiments and ideas come through pretty loud and clear. Reminded me a bit of a Samuel Beckett play. Great performances Don't see it if This is a tough piece and is not for every taste, It looks like a a new for but is quite old.

Alex Poots, the theatrical visionary who was wooed from the Manchester International Festival to the Park Avenue Armory, moved crosstown to become artistic director at The Shed. This brings up an issue about the Griffin theater itself, a black box theater meaning it can be altered for each show. What you may not realize is that most of the sound effects and background music have been made entirely from a base of recorded clusters of notes sung by Ms. But this play — a brilliant mash-up of Helen of Troy and Marilyn Monroe really delivers at the sweet spot of gorgeous, funny and clever. Carson, a professor of the classics, a poet, a performance artist, and composer have created this theatrical poem that is a controlled explosion, a spiritual transformation of narrative with song and chants and sound and words, using the incomparable voice as the soundtrack to the night. Then there were a few moments of power and strength that come at about an hour in in the form of cantorial sounding music.

I was in the 2nd row on the left, and it felt like the actors were miles from me when they were on the other side of the stage. Whishaw comes in, dumps the suitcases, pins a few photos of Monroe to an easel. Written by Carson, Norma Jeane Baker of Troy features music by Paul Clarke and direction by Katie Mitchell. Marilyn Monroe is falling to pieces again. That most endlessly analyzed of Hollywood sex goddesses is now being subjected to an especially rigorous process of deconstruction — or is it evaporation? April 18th, 2019 See it if You're willing to be taken on this journey led by two phenomenal performances by Whishaw and Fleming. The best of these are entirely in the voice of Norma Jean.

Brilliance and cherries light her stage. I admit it's not an easy piece, but it was disheartening to see people giving up on it so quickly, either by completely checking out and talking amongst themselves, or by ditching the performance entirely and making loud clomping noises on the stairs in the process. I suppose the venue will be focusing more on abstract theater. Also This is an exceedingly confusing and bewildering play with two charact ers who have very little relevance to one another and whose words and actions are extremely difficult to interpret. The director is Katie Mitchell, the intensely cerebral theater and opera director.

The dialogue is so rich, every sentence a delicious taste in your mouth. If this first commission is not quite up to snuff, it serves to suggest an adventurous artistic sensibility that—given the two stars and initial Shed crowds—might well fill the house. Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, a new spoken and sung performance piece by poet, essayist, and scholar Anne Carson, opened at New York City's newest arts venue, The Shed, on April 9. It has the feel of an intimate black box. Norma Jeane Baker is practically plotless, more about the storytelling than anything else, so no part of its progression is surprising.
